Lessons from the Blue Bird One language is good, two is better

Many of our readers have children who grow up speaking at least two languages. As a rule, children who become bilingual are surrounded by a polylingual environment from birth up to about eleven years of age. But they tend to be bilingual to varying degrees. This is often a result of unequal exposure to each of the languages.

The fact that two languages can easily fit in a child’s brain does not necessarily mean that those languages are cohabiting peacefully and harmoniously.
